SLEEP YOGA
is a cultivated practice which takes place within the Slow Wave
Sleep portion of the sleep cycle. In the Sleep Yoga portion of
Deep Sleep, slow electrical brainwaves - delta from 2 to 4
hertz, and slightly faster theta waves - ideally are in balance
(50% delta, 50% theta).
Lamas say
that Sleep Yoga is Base (fundamental) consciousness, pure space,
like a screen.
One day a friend invited me to a Sleep Yoga
teaching given by an especially good Rinpoche, (precious teacher). For
three nights before the teaching, I couldn't sleep. During the
first evening's lecture, the Rinpoche explained that sleeplessness
was part of the initiation process into Sleep Yoga. The next
morning, I awoke refreshed to write the names of 110 people whose
karmas I was carrying. The karmas were perceived as lines of light
from me to those people. That day, at the teaching, the Rinpoche
introduced the process of "cutting the karmas" we hold with
others, as part of Sleep Yoga.
The clear luminance of low frequency Sleep Yoga
holds the subtle fields for the transmittal of information. To
achieve Sleep Yoga, a refined state, the delta and theta portions
of electrical activity should be in balance, with waking meditative
mind trained to reach delta states. An opened heart greatly
facilitates Sleep Yoga. The deepest sleep, between O.5
and 2 cycles per second, has more than 50% delta waves. Here is
pure light, pure bliss, but without those theta waves it is
difficult to bring the Sleep Yoga realizations to waking
consciousness.
Why Sleep Yoga?
Ever try to get a
diverse group of family, friends and strangers, from all cultures,
religions, and walks of life, to, not only meet, but agree,
without the individual egos and emotions and memories and concepts
and karmas and all the countries of mind getting in the way?
"Wherever there is
image," say the Lamas, "There is karma." Karma can be perceived as
conditioned constructions of the illusion that we receive as
reality.

The highest pure lands
Of low frequency dreams
All the reams of reasons
The changing tides and seasons...
Sleep deep, for there you connect to the precious
treasuries
On waves of water.
For Sky Dancers, born not to die,
Inhabit a pure positive land that's grand
On your own collective conscious agreements |
In Sleep Yoga, the low frequency delta places of sleeping mind, we
dwell in our own innate luminosity. These ground luminance states
are devoid of image and therefore (almost) devoid of karma. In the
clear light sleep of Rime mind - everyone kind mind entwined in
clear light - we cognize the void, and the origins of
manifestation.
If it is a dream, it is always re-cognition. As long as there
is image in the dream, it is part of maya, illusion. Primordial
mind, unborn and unconditioned, holds and unmolds the vibratory
grace of maya. And here, after we have cut all the karmic
traces "like light laces that tie us to the days and years, we
learn how to rearrange the new years completely free of fear,"
adds the horse.
"Discoursing on the Buddhic nature of
mind, always kind, always conscious of the divine in all things.
As we ring in the sounds of the new years, the elements learn to
obey our natural luminosity."
